In the dynamic world of occupational health and safety, ensuring the well-being of workers and the success of operations hinges upon comprehensive data collection and analysis. Two crucial processes that contribute significantly to this endeavour are Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) and Site Inspections. Let’s explore the values of supervisors, leaders or health and safety representatives, periodically reviewing the data on these forms.
Field Level Hazard Assessments, the beloved “Flah-fa”, are conducted on-site before work begins each day. These assessments aim to evaluate and control risks specific to the work environment and conditions present at the site.
Site Inspections, on the other hand, serve as a comprehensive check to ensure that safety protocols are effectively implemented and maintained throughout the workplace.
Here is what both types of forms can pinpoint upon review:
1. Identification of Unaddressed Hazards: completed forms may reveal tasks or activities that aren't part of the company's formal hazard assessment process. These tasks might not have been previously evaluated for hazards, risks, or control measures, leaving potential gaps in safety protocols.
2. Detection of Training Gaps: Records can also shed light on gaps in training, whether it pertains to first aid, emergency response, equipment usage, or other critical aspects of safety. It happens, projects and people move quickly. Using record review as an added layer of ensuring training is up to date reduces the risk of expired or missing training. Addressing these training gaps ensures that workers are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to mitigate risks effectively.
3. Management of New Equipment or Materials: Additionally, form review may highlight the presence of new equipment, tools, materials, or controlled products that require specific management, training, procedures or maintenance. Whether it's the introduction of innovative technology or the use of unfamiliar substances, identifying these new elements enables organizations to implement appropriate training programs, safety protocols, and risk mitigation measures.
Understanding what is captured in your field-level safety data—through processes like FLHA and Site Inspections—is essential for enhancing safety practices within your organization. By identifying unaddressed hazards, detecting training gaps, and managing new equipment or materials, organizations can proactively prioritize safety, mitigate risks, and foster a culture of safety excellence.
